Covid cases rise in China, Centre asks states to step up tracking of variants

Amid the increasing Covid -19 cases in China and other countries, the secretary of the Union Health ministry Rajesh Bhushan has asked state governments to submit samples of positive patients on a priority basis to the genome sequencing laboratories.

The Union Health Ministry has written to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) in light of increasing Covid-19 cases as witnessed in Japan, the United States, China, the Republic of Korea and Brazil.

In a statement issued by the health ministry, the secretary said it is essential to ramp up the genome sequencing of positive case samples to track the variants through the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACoG) network.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health agencies are studying the emergence of new Covid-19 variants, as coronavirus waves hit different countries worldwide.
