Kerala Monsoon Records 38% Decline in Rainfall This Year

Kerala has experienced a significant 38% drop in rainfall during this year’s 122-day monsoon season, with only two weeks remaining until the Southwest Monsoon recedes. The monsoon, which began on June 1 and is set to conclude on October 15, has been marked by lower rainfall levels than anticipated.

Initially, concerns arose due to reduced rainfall expectations, especially in June when there was a 60% shortfall. July saw a 9% decrease, followed by a substantial 87% drop in August. However, the situation has slightly improved this month, with a 33% increase in rainfall so far.

The influence of a cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast is expected to bring rainfall to North Kerala over the next three days. Additionally, low pressure forming over the Bay of Bengal will likely result in rain across all districts. Caution is advised, especially in hilly areas, due to intensified westerly winds in the evening.

Furthermore, another cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coast may lead to isolated thunderstorms and lightning in Kerala until October 1. Yellow alerts have been issued in 10 districts today and 11 districts tomorrow, signaling the need for heightened awareness and preparedness among residents.
