Two-wheeler accidents high in Kerala; reports

According to the Union Ministry of Road Transport accident report, two-wheeler accidents remains high in Kerala compared to national level. As per the reports, 45 per cent of road accidents in the country in 2018 involved two-wheelers. By 2022, it has come down to 39 per cent. However, two-wheeler accidents in Kerala in 2018 was 61 per cent.

However, this rose to 67 per cent in 2020, 64 per cent in 2021 and 61 per cent in 2022 despite a reduction in traffic during the lockdown. According to the Road Safety Authority, the increase in the use of two-wheelers and the inadequacy of the roads are the reasons for the rise in the number of accidents in the state. As per the data of the State Crime Records Bureau, overspeeding and rash driving accounted for 57 per cent of accidents in 2022.
