Trump Proposes Automatic Green Cards for Foreign College Graduates

Former President Donald Trump has proposed granting automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges, marking a significant departure from his usual anti-immigration rhetoric. In a podcast interview with venture capitalists and tech investors, Trump suggested that graduates, including those from junior colleges, should receive a green card as part of their diploma. He vowed to address this issue on his first day if re-elected.

Immigration has been a central issue in Trump’s 2024 campaign, often characterized by his harsh stance against illegal immigrants. His new proposal to offer green cards to foreign graduates represents a major shift, potentially expanding America’s immigration system. Trump has previously blamed illegal immigrants for various societal issues and promised massive deportations if he returns to office.

During his previous administration, Trump sought to curb legal immigration through measures like limiting family-based visas and the visa lottery program. He also signed the “Buy American and Hire American” executive order, aimed at protecting American workers by restricting business visas to the highest-paid or most skilled applicants.

Trump acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic hindered the implementation of some of these measures during his presidency. He cited examples of talented graduates from top U.S. colleges, particularly from India and China, who were forced to leave the country due to visa issues, subsequently achieving significant success abroad.
