Record-breaking Year for Kerala Tourism in 2023 with Surge in Domestic Visitors

Kerala Tourism is celebrating a remarkable surge in visitor numbers in 2023, with a record-breaking influx of domestic tourists. According to the state’s Tourism Minister, P A Mohamed Riyas, approximately 1.59 crore domestic tourists have visited Kerala this year, reflecting a substantial increase of 19.34% compared to the same period last year. The trend is indicative of Kerala’s enduring popularity as a tourist destination within the country.

The growth isn’t limited to domestic tourism; foreign tourist arrivals have also seen a staggering spike, increasing by 116.25% compared to the previous year. This increase in international visitors showcases Kerala’s global appeal and the effectiveness of its tourism initiatives. Ernakulam emerged as the top destination for domestic footfalls, followed by Idukki, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and Wayanad. In terms of foreign tourists, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Alappuzha, and Kottayam attracted the most visitors.

In addition to the tourism surge, Kerala is exploring avenues to further develop the sector. The state government is considering the establishment of a tourism university, tentatively named Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS). This proposed institute aims to provide comprehensive training for young individuals interested in various segments of the tourism industry.

Furthermore, the state is set to host its first Tourism Investors Meet on November 16, where Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the event. The meet is expected to bring together investors, business leaders, and industry stakeholders from across India and abroad. This initiative aligns with Kerala’s commitment to fostering investment and sustainable growth in the tourism sector.

Kerala Tourism Pavilion recently received accolades at the World Travel Market in London, winning the ‘Best Pavilion Award.’ Themed on ‘The Magical Everyday,’ the pavilion celebrated the state’s diverse festivals, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry that Kerala offers to its visitors. The awards and increasing tourism numbers indicate a positive trajectory for Kerala’s tourism industry in the coming years.
