Mullaperiyar Dam Authorities Prepare for Controlled Water Release Due to Rising Levels

As the water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam reached 137.50 ft on Monday, authorities are taking precautionary measures to manage the increased flow of water. In response to unexpected and continuous rains in the catchment area, the Idukki District Disaster Management Authority conducted a review chaired by Collector Sheeba George. Given the rising water levels, the decision has been made to open the shutters of the dam in phases, starting from 10 am on Tuesday

. The gradual release through the spillway aims to manage the excess water, with an initial release of 1,000 cusecs. An alert has been issued for residents along the riverbanks, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in the face of potential increased water flow. The Mullaperiyar Dam, which is over 125 years old, has a maximum storage limit of 142 ft, highlighting the significance of controlled releases to ensure safety and prevent overflow.
