Swift Fee Collection at Sabarimala: Nilakkal Parking Center Integrates FASTag for Pilgrims

In a bid to streamline the vehicle parking fee collection process for Sabarimala pilgrims, Kerala’s largest parking center in Nilakkal is set to integrate FASTag technology. The initiative aims to significantly reduce the long queues for collecting parking fees at the pilgrimage site. ICICI Bank has been entrusted with the responsibility of collecting parking fees through FASTag, marking the bank’s second major parking fee assignment after the Tirupati temple.

The toll gate, scheduled to be inaugurated on November 10, will be positioned at the entrance of the parking ground. Initially, a three-lane track is planned, with two lanes operational in the initial phase. The integration of FASTag is expected to streamline the process, allowing vehicles to pass through the gate in approximately four seconds. On average, the Nilakkal ground accommodates around 6,000 vehicles, with an annual influx of nearly four lakh vehicles, as estimated by the Devaswom board. The toll gate will operate during the monthly poojas at the shrine, ensuring efficient fee collection during peak times.

Additionally, authorities have proposed the construction of a toll gate at the exit of the parking ground, and fees will be levied on a 24-hour basis initially. Both the Devaswom board and the police discourage parking vehicles for more than 24 hours to maintain smooth operations and optimize revenue collection.

This integration of FASTag technology at Nilakkal’s parking center marks a significant step toward enhancing efficiency and ensuring a hassle-free experience for Sabarimala pilgrims, addressing the challenges associated with parking fee collection at the pilgrimage site.
