President Murmu Applauds Neeraj Chopra for Historic Victory

India’s President Droupadi Murmu extended her praise to Neeraj Chopra, the nation’s javelin thrower, following his remarkable achievement of securing India’s first-ever gold medal at the esteemed World Athletics Championships 2023 held in Budapest.

Neeraj’s second attempt witnessed a remarkable throw of 88.17 meters, propelling him to maintain his lead over his Pakistani counterpart, Arshad Nadeem, who secured the second position.

President Murmu expressed her admiration for Neeraj’s accomplishment through her official social media account, declaring, “Neeraj Chopra’s victory in the javelin throw finals at Budapest not only marks a golden milestone in Indian sports history but also serves as a source of inspiration for countless young individuals across the nation.”

Earlier, on the same day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his congratulations to Neeraj via social media, lauding his exceptional dedication, precision, and passion that not only define his status as an athletic champion but also position him as an emblem of unparalleled excellence in the global sports arena.

Arshad Nadeem, the champion of the Commonwealth Games, secured the silver medal with a throw covering a distance of 87.82 meters, while Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic clinched the bronze with an impressive throw of 86.67 meters.

Indian athletes Kishore Jena (best throw: 84.77 m) and DP Manu (best throw: 84.14 m) achieved fifth and sixth positions, respectively.

This victory signifies India’s attainment of medals across all three categories at the World Championships. This achievement marks Neeraj’s second medal at the World Championships, having previously earned a silver medal.

The last Indian athlete to secure a medal at this prestigious global event was Anju Bobby George, who secured a bronze medal in the women’s long jump at the 2003 World Championships.
