Heatwave Warning for Onam Celebrations, Public Urged to Exercise Caution

Anticipating weather patterns, Onam festivities this year are expected to coincide with intense heat. The temperature is projected to remain elevated until Wednesday.

Today, temperatures in Kollam are predicted to surge by three degrees compared to yesterday’s peak of 36 degrees Celsius. Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Palakkad districts might experience temperatures exceeding normal levels by around two degrees, while Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts could see an increase of one to two degrees. The Disaster Management Authority has cautioned the public against the possibility of heat-related illnesses, particularly between 11 am and 2 pm. Revised forecasts indicate minimal chances of substantial rainfall in the state over the next week.

Monsoon Trough Shifts towards Himalayan Region The monsoon’s strength has waned with the monsoon trough shifting towards the Himalayan region. The intensification of the El Nino phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean has also played a role in the reduced rainfall. These conditions have concurrently led to the elevation of temperatures.
