Kerala Government Set to Provide 4 lakh Onam Kits for Free on Uthradam Day

Ration outlets across Kerala are gearing up for a significant rush on Wednesday, as they prepare to distribute complimentary food kits to AAY (Yellow) ration card holders as part of the state’s Onam festivities.

Earlier this week, approximately 200,000 ration card holders were beneficiaries of these free kits, generously provided by the state administration for the occasion of Onam. Moreover, an additional 400,000 yellow card holders are slated to receive their Onam kits on Monday.

To facilitate the smooth distribution of these kits, the Civil Supplies Department has directed store owners to keep their shops open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Challenges arising from the state’s financial constraints seem to have resulted in a delay in the timely provision of these food kits prior to the Onam holiday. Officials from the food department explained that the delay was attributed to difficulties encountered in sourcing the necessary food items for the kits.

In a contrasting statement, Food Minister G.R. Anil assured that all ration shops had been stocked with Onam kits by Sunday afternoon.

The distribution of these complimentary kits extended to welfare institutions across various districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode, and was successfully completed on Sunday. Furthermore, 136 tribal villages have also been beneficiaries of these free Onam Kits.
