Kerala’s KSRTC Expands Budget Tourism, Crosses Borders

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), commonly known as the common man’s vehicle, has unexpectedly become a significant player in the state’s flourishing tourism sector. The corporation’s Budget Tourism initiative, launched two years ago, has transformed into a crowd puller, offering pocket-friendly trips to captivating tourist spots within the state. Contrary to expectations, this initiative, which began as a local travel option, has now extended its reach beyond state borders.

KSRTC is set to elevate its ‘Budget Tourism’ program by organizing affordable leisure trips to popular destinations such as Ooty and Bangalore, transcending state boundaries. Talks have been successfully concluded with authorities in the neighboring states, marking a new chapter in the KSRTC’s tourism venture.

Success of Budget Tourism

When the project was initiated, skeptics questioned the logic behind a loss-making entity venturing into leisure trips. However, the results have silenced the critics. The project, initiated two years ago, generated modest earnings of Rs three crore in its first year. However, this figure skyrocketed, crossing Rs 16 crore in the last fiscal year. The initiative included 4182 services, catering to 31.10 lakh visitors and covering over one lakh km. With the imminent launch of an ‘Online Tour Booking’ facility, the number of tourists opting for Budget Tourism is expected to rise further.

Pocket-Friendly Packages and Accommodations

KSRTC’s Budget Tourism program offers cost-effective travel and lodging options, enticing travelers with affordable prices. Old KSRTC buses have been converted into sleeper dorms, stationed at tourist destinations, offering basic amenities including lavatory and washroom facilities. These accommodations cost as low as Rs 220 for a night’s stay, providing an economical alternative to traditional hotel stays that cost significantly more.

Safety and Accessibility

One of the notable features of Budget Tourism is its focus on safety and accessibility. In the event of a breakdown, KSRTC can swiftly replace the affected bus with another one from the nearest depot, ensuring the journey continues without significant disruptions. Additionally, the initiative makes leisure trips accessible to all, offering an opportunity for those who do not own vehicles or cannot afford luxury accommodations to explore scenic tourist locations.

Partnership with IRCTC

KSRTC is also exploring collaborations with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Promotion Corporation (IRCTC). The plan involves providing booking facilities for IRCTC tours in all KSRTC depots across the state, enhancing the ease of travel for tourists arriving from outside the state.

With the ‘Tour Week’ celebrations in progress, KSRTC is operating additional leisure trip services, connecting various regions and popular destinations within Kerala, attracting travel enthusiasts.

KSRTC’s Budget Tourism initiative has not only transformed the state’s tourism landscape but also exemplified how a public carrier can become a catalyst for promoting local tourism. By offering affordable and accessible travel options, the KSRTC has opened the doors of exploration to everyone, making leisure trips a reality for the common man.
