Violence continues in Manipur: Gunfire Erupts in Multiple Locations, Meiti Community Appeals to Prime Minister

Imphal: Amidst the ongoing turmoil in Manipur, incidents of gunfire occurred at five different locations. The government has reported that security forces responded with significant force, and fortunately, no casualties have been documented so far. During a search operation, nine weapons were confiscated from various sites.

In the midst of these developments, the Meiti community has communicated their concerns to the Prime Minister, urging that Manipur should remain united and that the proposition for a separate state should be declined. This correspondence from the Meiti community coincided with scheduled talks between the Kuki community and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Concurrently, the Supreme Court has directly intervened in the Manipur conflict, instigating a peace initiative by assembling a committee composed of three female judges. Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud articulated the primary objective of reinstating public confidence in the implementation of law and order.

Leading the three-member committee is former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Geeta Mittal. The additional committee members are Asha Menon, a former judge of the Delhi High Court, and Shalini Joshi, formerly associated with the Bombay High Court. This decision emerged following an inquiry involving Manipur’s Director General of Police (DGP), Rajeev Singh, who appeared before the Supreme Court. The court declined the request to transfer cases beyond the jurisdiction of Manipur.
