High Heat Index Spurs Alerts in Kerala: 9 Districts on Watch

Kerala’s State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued cautionary alerts due to surging temperatures, with the effective heat index surpassing 40 degrees Celsius in the state. The KSDMA urged the public to remain vigilant, especially during peak sun hours from 11 am to 3 pm, and suggested conserving water, staying hydrated, and adopting protective measures against the heat.

The KSDMA’s directive emphasized responsible water use and advised storing rainwater efficiently. Hydration was stressed, with a recommendation to drink water regularly and abstain from dehydrating beverages. Dressing in light-colored cotton clothing, using umbrellas or hats for shade, and adhering to forest department guidelines in fire-prone areas were also highlighted.

Precautions were advised for potential fire hazards in areas like markets, buildings, and waste collection centers. The authority also extended guidelines to schools, urging avoidance of outdoor activities during peak heat hours and advocating care for vulnerable sections like the elderly, pregnant women, children, and those with health issues.

Specific groups including online food delivery staff, journalists, police officers, construction workers, and others engaged in strenuous tasks were advised to minimize sun exposure during noon and ensure proper hydration.

In light of a temperature surge forecasted by the Indian Meteorological Department, warnings were issued for nine districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode. Elevated temperatures up to 36 degrees Celsius are predicted in some districts, emphasizing the importance of staying cautious and adapting to the heat.
