Central Government Initiates Coral Reef Restoration for Tourism Boost in Kerala

The central government is initiating a comprehensive plan to revitalize and safeguard coral reefs in Kerala, with a primary objective of boosting the tourism sector. The identified regions for coral reef plantation encompass Vizhinjam, Thangassery in Kollam, and Tirumullavaram, based on recommendations from experts in the field. A recent study led by Alvin Anto, a Senior Research Fellow at the CMFRI, suggested that coral reefs, which have been adversely affected by coral bleaching, could potentially regain their full vitality if provided with a conducive environment. This initiative aims to reintroduce coral reefs in select locations across Kerala, creating conditions that are favorable for sustaining algae, a crucial element for the vibrant colors of coral reefs.

The proposed method involves planting peeled portions from the coral reefs of Lakshadweep in carefully chosen areas in Kerala, ensuring the necessary presence of fish and algae. Artificial ponds can be employed to rear fish, contributing to the overall health of the coral reef ecosystem. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of regulating and making coastal construction activities more environmentally friendly. Implementation of shade structures in coral reef areas is also suggested to provide protection from the intense sunlight. While the initiative holds promise for ecological restoration, addressing practical challenges is crucial for the success of this ambitious plan, including the effective control of coastal construction activities and the establishment of sustainable environmental practices in the region.
