Google Pixel 9 with Tensor G4 Shows Lower Benchmark Scores than Tensor G3 on Geekbench

Recently, a listing on the Geekbench benchmarking website has surfaced, purportedly revealing details about the upcoming Google Pixel 9 powered by the Tensor G4 processor. This development comes as Google prepares for the launch of its next flagship series, expected in October.

The benchmark results indicate that the Pixel 9 will come equipped with 8GB of RAM and run on Android 14. In terms of performance, the device achieved a score of 1,653 in single-core testing and 3,313 in multi-core testing. While these numbers are respectable, they show a slight decrease compared to the scores achieved by last year’s Pixel 8 series, which was powered by the Tensor G3 processor. Additionally, the scores are notably lower than those achieved by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.

The Tensor G4 chipset, codenamed “Tokay,” is listed as featuring an octa-core CPU configuration. It includes one prime CPU core clocked at 3.10GHz, three mid-cores running at 2.60GHz, and four cores operating at 1.95GHz. This setup differs from the Tensor G3, which featured nine CPU cores.

Initial reports suggested that the Tensor G4 would bring improvements over its predecessor, but the benchmark results raise questions about its comparative performance. AnTuTu scores also hinted at a minor performance boost compared to the Tensor G3, though specifics were not detailed in the Geekbench listing.

It’s important to note that these benchmarks are based on early listings and may not accurately reflect the final performance of the Pixel 9 series. There’s a possibility that the tests were conducted on prototype units or devices still undergoing optimization.

Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 9 series alongside the Pixel Fold 2 in October. The standard Pixel 9 is rumored to feature a 6.24-inch display, while the Pro model may come with a slightly larger 6.34-inch screen. As the launch date approaches, more details about the Pixel 9’s specifications and performance are likely to emerge, providing a clearer picture of Google’s latest flagship offering.
