New Criminal Laws Set for Implementation on July 1

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has confirmed that the new criminal laws will be implemented from July 1, despite demands from senior lawyers, including the All India Lawyers Union, to delay the replacement of existing laws.

The new laws set to replace the Indian Penal Code (1860), Evidence Act (1872), and Criminal Procedure Code (1973) are:

Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita

Bharatiya Nagarika Suraksha Samhita

Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam

The Law Minister emphasized that these new laws incorporate many innovative ideas and are well-suited for contemporary times. Parliament passed the new laws in December 2023, and they received the President’s assent in the same month, with the official notification issued in February.
