Monsoon Wreaks Havoc in Delhi: 5 Dead, Severe Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos

The monsoon arrived with full force in Delhi, resulting in the highest single-day rainfall in June in 88 years. The torrential downpour caused severe flooding, brought traffic to a standstill, and tragically led to five deaths due to rain-related incidents. The victims included a cab driver at Delhi airport, a man electrocuted in Rohini, two children who drowned in New Usmanpur, and another man who drowned in Shalimar Bagh. Additionally, three laborers were trapped when a wall collapsed in Vasant Vihar, with rescue operations continuing. Major tunnels, including Pragati Maidan, were closed, and reports of flooding came from across the city, affecting even upscale areas like Lutyens’ Delhi. Vehicles were submerged, and power cuts and fallen trees added to the chaos.

The heavy rainfall, recorded at 228.1 mm at Safdarjung, far exceeded the June average, causing severe disruptions. Passengers stranded in floodwaters were rescued by police and rescue teams using life jackets and ropes. Social media posts showed the extent of the flooding, with prominent figures like Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari sharing their experiences. The Delhi government announced a 24-hour control room to monitor the situation, while the Lieutenant Governor called for emergency measures and the return of all senior officers from leave. The Delhi Metro and transport services faced significant disruptions, and the BJP criticized the government for inadequate preparation. As rescue and relief efforts continue, the city grapples with the aftermath of this unprecedented monsoon onslaught.
