Thiruvananthapuram Airport Set for Major Expansion to Accommodate One Crore Passengers

Thiruvananthapuram airport is poised for significant development aimed at accommodating up to one crore passengers annually, a substantial increase from its current capacity of 32 lakhs. The Adani Group has engaged a multinational company to draft a comprehensive masterplan for this ambitious project.

The expansion plans include enhancing leisure, entertainment, and shopping facilities within the airport premises. A new state-of-the-art air traffic control tower will be strategically located near the international terminal entrance. Additionally, the existing runway, measuring 3373 meters in length and 150 feet wide, will undergo renovation to ensure durability comparable to international standards, promising a crack-free surface for the next 15 years.

Adding to the airport’s infrastructure will be a 240-room, 660-person capacity five-star hotel situated adjacent to the international terminal. This facility aims to accommodate passengers and airline staff during flight disruptions or delays, ensuring convenience and comfort.

Several airliners, including Akasha Airlines and Air India with new services to Bengaluru starting soon, are expected to contribute to the growth of domestic travelers at Thiruvananthapuram airport. As part of the expansion, domestic operations currently at Shangumugam will shift to the expanded international terminal, with plans to demolish the existing domestic terminal by 2027.

Financially, the project involves an investment of Rs 2000 crores over three years, approved by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA). This includes terminal expansions, construction of a new air traffic control tower, and comprehensive runway re-carpeting. The new terminal design will feature separate floors for departure and arrival, spacious check-in counters, expansive immigration and customs areas, and upgraded shopping and lounge facilities. These enhancements aim to streamline passenger flow and reduce waiting times for customs and immigration clearance.

Anticipating a significant increase in passenger traffic, projections estimate 50 lakhs passengers for the current year, reflecting a steady growth trajectory from previous years. With these developments, Thiruvananthapuram airport is set to emerge as a pivotal hub catering to the burgeoning air travel demands of the region.
