Kochi-Dubai Passenger Ship Service: Milestone Achieved with Shortlisting of Operators

The eagerly anticipated Kochi-Dubai passenger ship service has reached a significant milestone with the shortlisting of two companies tasked to operate the route. Spearheaded by the Kerala Maritime Board, discussions have progressed after inviting applications earlier this year, resulting in the selection of Kozhikode-based Jabal Ventures Private Limited and Chennai-based White Shipping. According to NS Pillai, Chairman of the Kerala Maritime Board, both companies have shown keen interest in the project and discussions are underway to finalize the operational framework.

The next steps involve collaboration with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and the Shipping Corporation of India to address legal and logistical challenges. A detailed report assessing the proposals of both companies will be submitted to the state government, paving the way for finalizing contractual agreements. It’s anticipated that once contracts are awarded, the service could commence within three months.

Initially planned from Beypore, the route has been redirected to Kochi, potentially reducing travel time to Dubai to approximately three days. There has been strong advocacy for keeping ticket prices below Rs 10,000 to ensure affordability and accessibility for travelers. The Malabar Development Council, advocating for this service, highlights its potential to transport goods like footwear, Kozhikode halwa, and agricultural products which currently face limited air transport options.

The passenger ships under consideration can accommodate up to 1200 passengers, presenting an alternative mode of travel that could significantly benefit both the tourism sector and the economy. The Kerala Maritime Board is also exploring the possibility of extending similar passenger-cargo services to other states and within Kerala ports. This initiative has garnered interest from approximately twelve companies, underscoring its potential impact on regional connectivity and economic growth.
