Celebrating Onam in New York: Snake Boat Race and Traditional Festivities at Long Island

The New York Malayali Heritage Foundation is gearing up to celebrate Onam in grand style this year on September 15 at Long Island’s Cow Meadow Park. Emulating the vibrant festivities of Kerala, the highlight of the event will be a traditional snake boat race set to unfold on Thiruvonam day. Alongside the boat race, attendees can enjoy a rich array of cultural activities including vadamvali (tug of war), pulikali (tiger dance), and chendamelam (traditional percussion music). The lush lawns of the park will be adorned with athappoovu (floral carpets), enhancing the festive ambiance.

Organized by the foundation, this celebration aims to bring together the Malayali community and enthusiasts of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage in New York. It’s not just about savoring the delicious Onasadya (feast) but also about participating in and witnessing the traditions that make Onam special.
