Unlocking Opportunities: Understanding the New Multiple-Entry Schengen Visa for Indians

Indians planning to visit Europe can now rejoice as the European Commission has introduced new rules allowing frequent travellers from India to apply for a multiple-entry Schengen visa with extended validity. This recent development comes as welcome news for those who frequently travel to Europe for business, leisure, or other purposes.

The multiple-entry Schengen visa enables holders to travel freely within the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days within a period of 180 days. It’s important to note that these visas are not tied to a specific purpose, such as tourism or business, but they do not grant the right to work in the Schengen area.

The European Commission announced the adoption of specific rules regarding the issuing of multiple-entry visas to Indian nationals, which offer more favorable terms compared to the standard visa code. Under the new regime, Indian nationals residing in India can now apply for long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas with extended validity.

According to the new visa cascade regime for India, eligible Indian nationals can obtain a two-year visa after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. Subsequently, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining, the two-year visa can be followed by a five-year visa. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 EU member states, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. This allows travellers with a valid Schengen visa to explore a diverse range of destinations across Europe seamlessly.

For those interested in applying for the multiple-entry Schengen visa, it’s advisable to check the official website for detailed information and guidelines regarding the application process. With easier access to visas with extended validity, Indian travellers can look forward to unlocking new opportunities for travel and exploration in Europe.
