Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Forecast in Kerala, NDRF Teams Deployed

In anticipation of heavy rainfall and strong winds during the Southwest monsoon, the Kerala state government has requested the pre-deployment of nine National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. According to a press note from the Commandant Battalion 4, NDRF, Arakkonam, these teams will be stationed in Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kollam, Kozhikode, Thrissur, and Wayanad. The teams are equipped for flood rescue, collapsed structure search and rescue, and advanced communication operations.

“Our 24×7 control room in Arakkonam is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with Kerala’s emergency operation control room. Advanced communication facilities and vehicle-mounted antenna facilities will be deployed. The teams departed early in the morning to different districts. An integrated control room facility is closely monitoring the operations,” the Commandant stated.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Kerala is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on June 21 and 22, and extremely heavy rainfall on June 23 due to a cyclonic circulation over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana. Strong westerly/southwesterly winds at lower levels are expected to prevail over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region from June 21 onwards, leading to widespread rainfall activity.

The rainfall forecast indicates that rain or thundershowers are expected at most places in Kerala and Lakshadweep over the next seven days.
