Kerala Legislative Assembly Approves Resolution to Rename State as ‘Keralam’

The Kerala Legislative Assembly has unanimously approved a resolution to rename the state as “Keralam.” Proposed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the resolution received support from both the opposition and treasury benches, signifying a collective agreement on the matter. This resolution will now be forwarded to the central government for approval.

In August 2023, a similar resolution was passed and sent to the Centre, urging for “immediate steps” to amend the state’s name under Article 3 of the Constitution. This article pertains to the formation and reorganization of states, including changes to their names, boundaries, and areas. However, the previous resolution did not materialize due to a technical objection. Considering this, the Assembly decided to pass a new resolution on Monday to ensure the renaming process proceeds smoothly.
