Heavy Rains Cause Extensive Damage Across Kerala; Coastal Alerts Issued

Heavy rainfall, triggered by a low-pressure area, caused widespread damage across Kerala yesterday. In Thiruvananthapuram, a tragic incident occurred when a pick-up driver, Safiuddin (63), was electrocuted by a tree that fell on a power line at Shahnaz Villa, Thekkinkad, Nagarur. Additionally, coastal areas have been severely affected by sea surges.

The weather forecast indicates a reduction in rainfall intensity starting today, leading to the withdrawal of orange and red alerts. However, the damage remains significant, with 108 houses partially destroyed and five houses completely ruined. In Periya, Kasaragod, landslides occurred, but fortunately, there were no casualties. A house in Chembrassery, Malappuram, was completely destroyed, but residents Nellengara Suresh and his wife escaped unhurt.

In Idukki, rainfall intensity has lessened, including in hilly areas, but restrictions on tourist centers remain. The shutters of Kallarkutty Dam were raised by 30 cm. Rising water levels in Pampa and Manimalayar rivers have flooded many areas in Upper Kuttanad, displacing 163 families who are now accommodated in 33 relief camps.
