Meta Updates AI Content Labels to ‘AI Info’ Amid Criticism

Meta has responded to criticism regarding its AI content detection labels by updating them from “Made with AI” to “AI Info.” This change follows backlash from Instagram influencers and photographers who felt their original posts were inaccurately labelled as AI-generated. The new label aims to provide clearer context about images and videos edited using AI tools, addressing the confusion caused by the previous label.

With the “AI Info” label, users can now click to access more details about the content. This includes information stating whether generative AI was used in creating or editing the post. Meta also plans to implement industry-standard indicators, such as those from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), to enhance its AI content detection capabilities.

Despite these efforts, concerns remain about the broad application of the “AI Info” label, potentially diluting its effectiveness in identifying deepfakes and manipulative AI-generated content. Meta acknowledges ongoing challenges and is committed to refining its AI labelling processes in collaboration with industry partners to better align with user expectations and improve accuracy.
