Warning for Pani Puri Lovers: Artificial Colors Linked to Cancer and Asthma Risk

If you love pani puri, beware of those made with artificial colors. Recent reports suggest that pani puris containing artificial colors may increase the risk of cancers and asthma, among other health issues.

Food Safety officials in Karnataka conducted tests on 260 samples from roadside stalls, revealing alarming results. Approximately 22% of pani puris failed quality tests, with 41 samples containing artificial colors and cancer-causing agents. Additionally, 18 samples were deemed stale and unfit for consumption.

In response, Karnataka’s Food Safety and Standards Department has imposed strict penalties, including fines up to Rs 10 lakh and potential imprisonment, for the use of artificial colors in various dishes. Earlier, the state banned Rhodamine-B, an artificial color used in dishes like gobi manchurian and cotton candy.

Edwina Raj, from Aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru, warned that excessive consumption of artificial food colors and flavoring agents poses significant health risks. These risks include increased cancer risk, disturbances in gut health leading to inflammation, hyperactivity in children, allergic reactions, and even asthmatic attacks. Contaminated water used in pani puri can also lead to foodborne illnesses such as typhoid.

Instead of artificial additives, Edwina suggests opting for foods colored and flavored naturally using ingredients like beetroot, turmeric, and saffron strands. This shift can enhance both safety and nutritional value, reducing the health risks associated with artificial additives.
