Seven Candidates Remain in Puthuppally Bypoll Race After Nominations Scrutiny

After the scrutiny of nominations on Friday, a total of seven candidates are vying for victory in the upcoming Puthuppally legislative assembly constituency bypoll in Kerala. Among the ten candidates who submitted nominations, seven have been deemed eligible, including representatives from the three main political parties. The withdrawal of candidature is possible until August 21.

Chandy Oommen (UDF), Jaick C Thomas (LDF), G Lijin Lal (NDA), Santhosh Joseph, Luke Thomas, Shaji, and P K Devadas have had their nomination papers accepted, while those of Dr K Padmarajan, Manju S Nair, and Reji Zachariah were rejected.

Despite objections from the BJP about the date of signing the nomination papers by LDF candidate Jaick C Thomas, his nomination was approved. As per the candidates’ filed affidavits, Jaick possesses assets valued at Rs 2.08 crore, Lijin Lal has assets worth Rs 18.59 lakh, and Chandy Oommen’s assets amount to Rs 15.99 lakh.

The voting is scheduled for September 5, with the vote count taking place on September 8. The bypoll was necessitated due to the passing of the former Kerala chief minister and legislator, Oommen Chandy, last month.
