Supplyco Subsidy Overhaul: Committee Recommends Scrapping, Proposes Quarterly Price Adjustments

The ongoing subsidies for everyday commodities in Supplyco stores may face elimination as an expert committee recommends scrapping them. Headed by Dr K Ravi Raman, a Planning Board member, the committee suggests revising prices every three months based on market trends. Currently, Supplyco provides subsidies for 13 items, but the existing practices are straining the financial health of Supplyco. The proposed changes aim to provide up to 30 percent subsidies on various items and increase the range of subsidized items, making Supplyco more adaptable to market dynamics. Additionally, Maveli stores running in losses might be replaced by hi-tech ‘Signature Marts’ to enhance profitability, while the plan includes opening new Super Bazars for better financial outcomes.
