Voters Brace for Scorching Temperatures as Extreme Heat Warning Issued on Polling Day

Today, voters across the state are preparing to endure unusually high temperatures as they head to the polls, prompted by an extreme heat warning issued by the Disaster Management Authority. With twelve districts placed on yellow alert, concerns about heat-related issues are paramount.

Palakkad district stands at the forefront of this heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar to a staggering 41 degrees Celsius, triggering a red alert. Following closely behind, Kollam is also forecasted to experience scorching conditions, with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius. In other districts, temperatures are projected to be 2-4 degrees Celsius above normal levels.

Adding to the discomfort, districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki may witness summer rain and thunderstorms later in the day, particularly after 3 pm. The onset of summer rains is anticipated to occur in the second week of May.

Forecasted temperatures for the day across various districts include:

Thrissur and Kozhikode: Up to 38 degrees Celsius

Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Kannur: Up to 37 degrees Celsius

Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, and Kasaragod: Up to 36 degrees Celsius

As a precautionary measure, voters are urged to take heed of the following:

Exercise extreme caution, particularly in Palakkad and Kollam districts, due to the heightened risk of sunstroke.

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight while queuing up to cast your vote.

Pay special attention to vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, ensuring they are adequately hydrated and shaded.

Maintain hydration levels by drinking water regularly, wear loose and breathable clothing, and seek medical assistance if feeling unwell.

The Election Commission has recommended providing shaded areas at polling stations and ensuring access to drinking water for voters. Collaborative efforts will be made with nearby healthcare facilities to offer medical aid as needed, ensuring a safe and smooth polling process amidst challenging weather conditions.
