Kerala Government Introduces New KL 90 Registration Series for Official Vehicles
In a move to enhance identification and curb misuse, the Kerala Government has issued an official order introducing the new KL 90 registration series for all its vehicles. This series will also be applicable to vehicles used by Central Government officials, Public Sector Undertakings, Local Self-Government bodies, and Universities within the state.
The new registration series is structured as follows
KL 90A: State Government
KL 90B: Central Government
KL 90C: Local Bodies
KL 90D: Other government-owned public undertakings
To implement this change, the government has released a draft amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act (MVD). The final notification regarding the amendment is expected to be released later this month.
Existing vehicles under government ownership have been given a six-month grace period to transition to the new KL 90 series. During this period, these vehicles will be equipped with high-security number plates, ensuring enhanced security and easy identification.
The introduction of the KL 90 series comes as a response to the widespread misuse of ‘Kerala Government’ boards on private and contract vehicles. With this new registration system, government vehicles can be readily identified, promoting transparency and accountability in official vehicle usage.
