Kerala High Court Addresses ‘Foul Play’ by Film Internet Vloggers: Calls for Action

The Kerala High Court has intervened to address the issue of “foul play” by certain internet vloggers who manipulate public opinion against new movies. Justice Devan Ramachandran presided over a petition filed by Mubeen Rauf, the director of the film ‘Aromalinte Adyathe Pranayam,’ shedding light on the detrimental impact caused by vloggers with vested interests and their actions against the film industry. The petitioner sought legal action against these vloggers.

Justice Ramachandran emphasized the importance of establishing checks and balances in such cases. He directed the State Police Chief to investigate the matter and report to the court regarding the possibility of filing complaints against individuals or entities involved in such activities, including the unlawful practice of ‘Review Bombing.’ The court specifically highlighted that the focus should be on cases involving motivated and calculated reviews aimed at extortion and blackmail, rather than genuine and sincere critiques.

The court acknowledged that every movie represents intellectual property and involves the efforts, reputation, and aspirations of numerous individuals, not just the producers or directors. Justice Ramachandran stressed the distinction between fair criticism of intellectual property and malicious attempts to manipulate public perception for personal gain.

The court’s intervention provides a ray of hope for directors, producers, and others associated with the film industry. They are now encouraged to file complaints, triggering proper investigations under penal laws and cybercrime regulations. The case is set for further hearing on Tuesday, indicating a proactive step toward safeguarding the integrity of the film industry against malicious online activities.
