Indian Student Applications Plummet as UK Tightens Visa Laws; Decline in Nigerian Applicants Too

The dream of studying in the UK seems to be waning for Indian students, as the latest figures from the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS) reveal a significant drop in applications after the implementation of new visa laws. While the total number of international applications experienced a marginal increase of 0.7 percent, Indian student applications to British universities witnessed a sharp decline of four percent. A parallel trend is observed with a substantial decrease in applications from Nigeria, plummeting by 46 percent to 1,590 for undergraduate studies.

The decline in Indian student applications is attributed to legislation introduced in January, restricting family members accompanying all but postgraduate research students to the UK. The move was part of an effort to curb immigration into the country. The stringent measures are in response to a substantial influx of 7,45,000 migrants to the UK in 2022 alone, prompting the government’s proactive stance, especially in an election year.

The tightening of criteria for dependent visas and post-study work visas for students on student visas has further contributed to the diminishing number of applicants. The government’s rigorous approach towards immigration control is evident, and the repercussions are being felt in the declining interest of Indian and Nigerian students pursuing education in the UK.
