No road test for driving license from July 1

New Delhi, India From next month, trainees learning to drive at accredited driving training centres will not be required to take road tests for their driver’s licence.

A change to the Motor Vehicle Act that eliminates the road test will go into effect on July 1. The Union government has also issued a notification regarding the amendment, which allows for the establishment of more accredited driving training centres in the country.

Those who are interested can now establish such centres based on the notification. So far, the accredited centres have been located in a variety of locations under the jurisdiction of the government.

For applying for a licence to drive a light motor vehicle, a learner should have 29 hours of training spread out over four weeks. The remaining 29 hours should be spent on practical training, including four hours on a simulator to familiarise the trainee with various driving conditions such as night driving, rain, and fog.

The trainee must complete 38 hours of training, which includes 16 hours of theory and 22 hours of practical sessions, in order to obtain a medium or heavy motor vehicle driving licence (three hours on the simulator).

There are currently only a few accredited driving training centres in the country, with one in each state. The centre is located in the Malappuram district of Kerala, at Edappal.
The Centre’s current strategy is to allow more such facilities. Motor driving schools with a minimum of three acres, a workshop to familiarise trainees with vehicle parts, a driving simulator, and a test track would be accredited for five years.
