Inauguration of New Parliament Building Marks New Era for Indian Democracy

A historic moment in the annals of Indian democracy will be marked as the new Parliament building opens its doors for parliamentary proceedings, commencing today. The special session of Parliament, which convened in the old Parliament building, commenced yesterday and will conclude on Friday.

The construction of the new Parliament building, an integral part of the Central Vista complex, commenced on December 10, 2020, and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28, 2023. The project, helmed by architect Bimal Patel, carried a price tag of Rs 13,450 crore.

The current Parliament Building, inaugurated on January 18, 1927, by the then Viceroy of British India, Lord Irvine, and designed by architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, is poised to be repurposed into a museum, preserving its historical significance.
