Nipah Virus Detected in Bats in Wayanad, Kerala; Authorities Implement Precautionary Measures

Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, announced that tests conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on bats from Wayanad district have tested positive for the Nipah virus. Addressing the media, George reassured the public that there is no sign of mutation in the virus, and the variant identified in the samples from Bathery and Mananthavady regions is the same as in previous years.

“The ICMR has confirmed the presence of the Nipah virus in samples collected from bats in Wayanad. There is no need for panic. However, it is crucial for health personnel to receive adequate training to take precautionary measures, especially for patients admitted to hospitals with severe lung illnesses,” stated George. She emphasized the importance of vigilance among health professionals during routine patient examinations, urging a cautious approach.

This development follows an earlier incident in Kozhikode, where two deaths and six positive cases of the Nipah virus were reported a few months ago. The district was placed on high alert as part of localized containment measures. Authorities are now taking proactive steps to prevent the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of the residents in the affected areas.
