India Ranks 40th in Global Innovation Index 2023, Showcasing Remarkable Progress

India has maintained its 40th position in the Global Innovation Index 2023 among 132 economies, signifying a significant improvement from its 81st rank in 2015. The Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023 was introduced in India through a collaborative effort between NITI Aayog, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva.

Sacha Wunsch-Vincent, Co-Editor of the GII, praised India, particularly NITI Aayog, for its consistent progress in the global rankings. He highlighted India’s advancements in data-driven innovation and national-level initiatives, emphasizing the nation’s potential for a promising future in innovation, supported by its highly educated and entrepreneurial youth.

India also achieved the top position among 37 lower-middle-income group economies and emerged as the leading innovation performer among the 10 economies in Central and Southern Asia. India’s continuous status as an “innovation achiever” for the 13th consecutive year showcased its impressive development.

In 2021, India saw a surge in tertiary graduates in science and engineering, ranking 11th globally with 34 percent of total graduates. Additionally, India’s cultural and creative services exports experienced a significant growth of 21.4 percent in 2021, securing the 18th position in this thriving sector.

NITI Aayog highlighted India’s unwavering commitment to innovation and its journey toward becoming a global innovation leader. India’s consistent outperformance in various indicators positions it to drive economic growth, enhance resilience, and promote self-reliance through innovation.
