More dark clouds are expected to descend on rain-soaked Kerala in the coming days; a yellow alert has been issued in several districts

Kottayam: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the brief respite in the heavy rain in Kerala on Sunday is only a temporary respite.

The National Weather Service has predicted more rain in the state, which has already been hit by a slew of landslides and flash floods this weekend.

Heavy rain is expected to begin on Wednesday and last until next Sunday, October 24, according to the IMD.

Because the low-pressure area that has formed in the Arabian Sea is weakening, the next two days are likely to be cloudy with light showers.

However, with the arrival of easterly winds across southern India, this will change.

The State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a Yellow alert in ten of the state’s fourteen districts.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram are among them.

On Monday, all higher education institutions will be closed (October 18).

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged everyone to be extra cautious if the rains do not stop.

While urging people to follow the authorities’ instructions, he also cautioned them against making unnecessary trips during these hazardous weather conditions.

With water-borne diseases on the rise, the chief minister has also urged everyone to take the necessary precautions.

On Sunday, the state reported 23 deaths as a result of rain-related incidents.

While Kottayam had the most deaths (13), Idukki had 8, and Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode each had one.

This is the worst case of rain-related damage in Kottayam history.
