Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, marries at home in Britain.

Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who survived being shot by a Taliban gunman in her native Pakistan in 2012 at the age of 15, has married, she announced on social media on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old, who lives in the United Kingdom, said she and her new husband, whom she only identified as Asser, married in Birmingham and celebrated at home with their families.

“Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life,” she wrote on Twitter, adding four pictures to her post.

Apart from his first name, Malala provided no other information about her husband.

Asser Malik, general manager of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s High Performance Centre, was identified by internet users. However, no official confirmation was provided.

Malala is admired in many parts of the world, particularly in Western countries, for her personal bravery and eloquence in advocating for girls’ and women’s rights. Her activism has polarised public opinion in Pakistan.

Malala had told a British magazine in July of this year that she was unsure if she would ever marry.

“I still don`t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can`t it just be a partnership?” she was quoted as saying in a lengthy profile.

The comment had drawn criticism from many social media users in Pakistan at the time.
