Indian Railways Raises Compensation Tenfold for Train Accident Victims, Sets New Standards

Indian Railways has substantially increased the compensation provided to train accident victims, raising it by ten times the previous amount. The revised compensation scheme applies to individuals who have suffered injuries or lost their lives in train accidents. Specifically:

  1. Compensation for fatalities in train accidents has been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh.
  2. Compensation for severe injuries sustained in train accidents has risen from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh.
  3. Compensation for minor injuries in train accidents has been elevated from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000.

This compensation structure also extends to accidents occurring at railway crossings. If a patient requires hospitalization for over 30 days due to a severe injury, they will receive up to Rs 3,000 per day for a duration of approximately six months. In the case of hospitalization for up to five months, a daily payment of Rs 750 will be provided in the ten days leading up to discharge.

It’s important to note that these provisions do not apply to individuals who trespass at level crossings and subsequently cause accidents. This significant increase in compensation is expected to provide substantial support to victims of train accidents and their families.
