Kannur University Offers Education to Students from Manipur Affected by Communal Riots

Kannur : Kannur University (KU) has taken a unique step to provide advanced education to students whose academic pursuits have been disrupted due to communal conflicts in Manipur. This remarkable move marks the first instance in the nation where a university is reserving specialized seats for Manipur students.

During a press briefing on Monday, KU Vice-Chancellor Gopinath Ravindran announced that this decision was reached during a recent Syndicate meeting at the university. The resolution, introduced by Syndicate member N. Sukunya, received unanimous approval.

Vice-Chancellor Ravindran elaborated that designated seats will be set aside for this purpose. This measure was prompted by appeals from student organizations in Manipur. The university is dedicated to providing opportunities for students who possess the qualifications for higher education but have been hindered from pursuing it.

University offered essential lodging and financial aid to Manipur students enrolling at the university. Mr. Ravindran highlighted that admitted students will have ample time to furnish documentation substantiating their current educational status.

The university is also exploring the prospect of extending financial support to those securing admissions. Initiatives to secure government funding and public donations are under consideration.

Notably, the Syndicate has resolved to facilitate seamless admissions, accommodating both online and offline processes, and waiving the necessity for certificates, transfer documents, or other valuable paperwork.

Mr. Ravindran shared that a student has already displayed keen interest in enrolling in the Master’s program in Physical Education and Sports at the Department of Physical Education, situated at the Mangattuparamba campus of Kannur University.
