Study Finds Milk and Water Most Efficient Sources of Absorbing Vitamin D; Other Foods to Consider

A recent study presented at the 24th European Congress of Endocrinology in Milan highlights the significance of Vitamin D for various bodily functions, including immune system support and bone health. Inadequate Vitamin D levels have been linked to health issues, including a weakened response to diseases like COVID-19. To understand Vitamin D absorption better, a study conducted by Dr Rasmus Espersen and his colleagues at Aarhus University in Denmark focused on 30 postmenopausal women aged 60-80 who were Vitamin D deficient.

The study aimed to monitor changes in blood concentrations resulting from the consumption of 200g of D3-containing foods. Participants were given 500ml of water, milk, juice, juice with Vitamin D to whey protein isolate, and 500ml of water without Vitamin D (placebo) in random sequence. Surprisingly, the study found that the results in the water and milk groups were equal, despite milk containing more fat than water.

Other Vitamin D Rich Foods:

Yogurt: Yogurt is rich in protein and fortified with Vitamin D, providing about 5 IU per 8-ounce serving. It can be included in various dishes or consumed on its own.

Oatmeal: Oatmeal, a whole grain, is a good source of Vitamin D. It also contains essential minerals, vitamins, and complex carbohydrates necessary for a healthy diet.

Egg Yolk: Egg yolks are another source of Vitamin D. While they contain more calories and fat, they provide essential components like protein and healthy carbohydrates. Consumption should be limited to one yolk per day.

Orange Juice: Fresh orange juice is a health-promoting beverage. Ensure it’s freshly squeezed and avoid store-bought versions. A glass of fresh orange juice can be a nutritious addition to your breakfast.

Fatty Fish: Fatty fish such as herring, mackerel, salmon, and tuna are rich in Vitamin D, calcium, protein, and phosphorus. Including these fish in your diet can provide essential nutrients, including Vitamin D.
