As Mohanlal-starrer Devadoothan makes a comeback after 24 years, its music, particularly Vidyasagar’s reimagined version of the Carnatic classic ‘Entharo Mahanubhavulu,’ continues to capture attention. Despite the film’s initial lackluster box office performance in 2000, Vidyasagar’s compositions have remained popular.
In Devadoothan, Vidyasagar’s fusion of the Carnatic composition, originally by Tyagaraja, with Western elements such as violin, flute, and ghatam, added a unique touch. This choice, featured in a sequence introducing Mohanlal’s character, Vishal Krishnamoorthy, a renowned musician, significantly contributed to the film’s atmosphere. The track was seen as a tribute to Vishal’s musical master, enhancing the film’s thematic depth.
Raghunath Paleri, the film’s writer, revealed that Vidyasagar initially proposed ‘Entharo Mahanubhavulu’ over another composition, ‘Ksheerasagara Sayana,’ aligning better with the film’s narrative and emotional tone. The decision proved to be a fitting choice, as it resonated with the film’s tribute theme and audience connection.
