Vizhinjam Port Trials Attract Major Shipping Giants to Kerala

The successful trial runs at Vizhinjam port are drawing attention from some of the world’s leading shipping firms to Kerala’s capital. The initial trial was conducted by the San Fernando, operated by Maersk, the second-largest shipping line worldwide. Following this, the Mediterranean Shipping Corporation (MSC), the largest shipping company globally, is preparing to dock at Vizhinjam. MSC has started the process of setting up an office in Thiruvananthapuram to manage its operations at the port and has submitted the necessary documents to begin its activities.

The Adani Group, responsible for developing Vizhinjam port, is engaging with several other prominent shipping lines to highlight the port’s capabilities. Multiple trials have been performed to showcase Vizhinjam’s potential as a transshipment hub, demonstrating its capacity to handle large motherships efficiently. To date, three container ships have docked and departed from Vizhinjam successfully, with more trial runs scheduled until September, including anticipated arrivals from MSC. This development is expected to alleviate delays faced by large ships at Colombo port, reducing both time and costs in maritime transport.
