Empowering Women: Kerala’s Transformation into a Safe and Inclusive Tourism Destination

Kerala is set to undergo a remarkable transformation into a women-friendly tourism hub, led by initiatives from the Tourism Department. Based on a study conducted by the Tourism Mission, measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of women at major tourist spots, including Kovalam. Women will be strategically placed in roles such as taxi services, restrooms, and guide services, aiming to counter the risks of violence against women reported in these areas. Following incidents like the abduction, rape, and murder of a foreign woman in Kovalam in 2018, these actions are crucial.

One significant initiative involves the establishment of women-run homestays, addressing concerns about the safety of female travelers, especially those journeying alone in hilly regions. The presence of more female security personnel at tourist destinations is part of the plan, along with the introduction of women-led tour packages. These packages will provide a range of services, including accommodation, food, and transportation, all managed by women for women.

The Women-Friendly Tourism Scheme was launched in October 2022 by Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammad Riaz. For the financial year 2023-24, an allocation of 4.75 crore has been made for the project. To date, 1,800 women have received training through both in-person and online programs. The program’s objectives include creating a network of 150,000 women in the travel sector, establishing 10,000 new women-owned businesses, and generating employment opportunities for 30,000 individuals. These efforts aim not only to enhance the tourism experience in Kerala but also to empower women and ensure their safety and inclusion in the industry.
