Hafeet Rail Project: Enhancing Connectivity Between Oman and Abu Dhabi

The Hafeet Rail project, a collaborative effort between Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company, has transitioned into the implementation phase, marking a significant milestone in the region’s transportation infrastructure. This joint venture aims to link Sohar in Oman with Abu Dhabi in the UAE, revolutionizing travel and trade between the two nations. By significantly reducing travel time, with estimates suggesting a cut of 1 hour 40 minutes from the current journey duration, the project promises to enhance connectivity and facilitate smoother movement of goods and people.

Notably, the passenger train is expected to operate at speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour, completing the journey between Sohar and Abu Dhabi in just 1 hour 40 minutes, and between Sohar and Al Ain in 1 hour 47 minutes. With a capacity to accommodate up to 400 passengers, the rail service holds the potential to transform regional tourism and economic activities. Furthermore, the freight trains, with a remarkable capacity of over 15,000 tonnes, are poised to bolster various sectors including mining, agriculture, retail, and petrochemicals in both countries.

With a total investment of $3 billion, the Hafeet Rail project not only serves as a crucial link between Oman and the UAE but also acts as a gateway to regional markets, amplifying opportunities for cross-border trade and economic growth. By overcoming the challenging terrain of the Jebel Hafeet Mountain ranges, characterized by mountains, deserts, and limestones, the project exemplifies resilience and innovation in transportation infrastructure development. As it progresses, Hafeet Rail is set to stimulate job creation and foster closer ties between Oman and the UAE, heralding a new era of connectivity and prosperity in the region.
