Income Tax Department Issues Notice to CPI for Rs 11 Crore Dues

The Income Tax Department has issued a notice to the Communist Party of India (CPI), a key member of the opposition INDIA bloc, demanding payment of dues amounting to Rs 11 crore. This notice comes in the wake of alleged discrepancies related to the use of an old PAN card by the party, resulting in penalties and accrued interest. A senior leader of the CPI has stated that the party is seeking legal assistance to address this matter, indicating its intent to contest the claims made by the tax authorities.

Previously, the Income Tax Department had served a notice to the Indian National Congress, demanding payment of Rs 1700 crore, inclusive of penalties and interest. These developments underscore the heightened scrutiny faced by political parties in India regarding their financial dealings, as tax authorities intensify efforts to ensure compliance with tax regulations and address any irregularities or discrepancies that may arise.
