Heat Wave Alert: Precautions Urged as Temperatures Soar in Kerala

A heat wave warning has been issued for several districts of Kerala, with the Central Meteorological Department forecasting high temperatures on May 8 and May 9. Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, and Kozhikode are among the areas expected to experience heat wave conditions, with temperatures rising significantly.

In the upcoming days, Kollam, Palakkad, and Kozhikode are projected to reach temperatures as high as 39 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Thrissur are forecasted to see temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius. Additionally, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Kannur are expected to experience temperatures of 37 degrees Celsius, while Malappuram and Kasaragod may reach 36 degrees Celsius.

With the onset of a heat wave, extreme caution is advised, as sunburn and sunstroke become more prevalent. Sunstroke, in particular, can have severe consequences, including fatalities. Therefore, it is crucial for both the public and non-governmental organizations to remain vigilant and take appropriate measures.

Strict adherence to the following instructions is recommended:

Minimize outdoor activities, especially during the daytime.

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and cease all outdoor work and sports.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Essential outings should be limited, with the use of umbrellas and appropriate footwear.

Individuals engaging in strenuous activities should take regular breaks and rest.

Refrain from consuming alcohol, carbonated drinks, tea, and coffee during the day to prevent dehydration.

Ensure adequate ventilation at home, office, and workplaces.

Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups such as bed-ridden patients, elderly individuals, pregnant women, children, and those with disabilities.

Postpone public events to cooler evening hours.

Practice self-restraint and prioritize personal safety.

By adhering to these precautions, individuals can minimize the risks associated with heat waves and safeguard their well-being during periods of elevated temperatures.
