Electric Two-Wheeler Sales Dip in April, Other EV Segments Surge

Sales of electric two-wheeler vehicles in India witnessed a slight decline in April compared to the same period last year, as revealed by data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). With deliveries dropping by 2.63% to 65,111 units, concerns over reduced government subsidies and increasing prices contributed to the subdued performance of this key segment in the EV market. The uncertainty surrounding the fate of demand subsidies post the expiration of the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024 (EMPS) in July adds to the challenges faced by the industry.

While the electric two-wheeler segment faces hurdles, other segments of the electric vehicle market experienced robust growth in April. Electric three-wheeler sales surged by 10.36% to 42,030 units, while electric passenger vehicles recorded a significant jump of 22.79% to 7,415 units. Additionally, the electric commercial vehicle segment displayed strong performance, with sales rising by 43.3% to 510 units. Despite the dip in electric two-wheeler sales, the broader EV market in India shows promising signs of expansion and adoption across various vehicle categories.
