IMD Predicts Extreme Rainfall: Red Alert for Pathanamthitta and Idukki Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall on May 22. These districts already had orange alerts in place due to expectations of very heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Earlier in the day, the IMD had withdrawn red alerts for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Kottayam but reinstated the warnings as severe weather conditions persisted.

In addition to the red alerts, the IMD has issued orange alerts for eight districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, which has been experiencing widespread rainfall. A yellow alert has been issued for six northern districts: Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kasaragod. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised residents to stay vigilant due to the potential hazards posed by the heavy rains.

In a related incident, a 66-year-old woman in Pothencode, Thiruvananthapuram, tragically died after a portion of the wall of her under-demolished house collapsed due to the intense rain. This incident underscores the dangers associated with the severe weather conditions affecting the state.
