KSRTC to Launch Training Program for Frequent Accident-Prone Drivers

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is initiating a new training program aimed at drivers who have been involved in frequent accidents. This move comes in response to findings that identified habitual accident-offenders primarily from the Thiruvananthapuram Central, Kottarakkara, Kozhikode, and Ernakulam units. These drivers, along with those involved in major accidents, will undergo a remedial training program.

A comprehensive list of drivers who frequently cause accidents will be compiled. These drivers will be sent for specialized training to address their driving behaviors and improve safety standards. Drivers who are involved in another accident within three months of receiving this training will be placed on a separate list. The Managing Director will be notified of each driver’s name, the reason for their accident, and the actions taken against them.

Despite ongoing studies and reviews at both the unit and chief office levels, accidents remain prevalent. To tackle this, KSRTC has appointed line squad inspectors to prevent KSRTC and SWIFT buses from obstructing traffic and to ensure proper parking practices. Additionally, efforts are being made to reduce the costs associated with repairing buses, losses due to non-operational buses, and expenses from lawsuits, all of which have accumulated to a significant amount.

Drivers attribute the high accident rate to several factors, including the age and poor condition of buses, inadequate road conditions, and the careless driving of other vehicles. They also highlight the pressure to meet schedules, especially in light of national highway construction work, as a contributing factor to the accidents.
